Kanvaz is a painting studio that promotes arts and leisure. Established in 2023, it offers a safe and comfortable atmosphere for people of all ages to express themselves, improve their skills and take part in imaginative projects, notably through free painting and structured workshops.

Our aim is to foster the emergence of a community of people of diverse backgrounds and ages. At Kanvaz, everyone can discover the joys of painting!

Daytime activities include a series of painting and craft sessions that take advantage of natural light. On certain evenings, we turn off the lights for our Paint in The Dark experience, a unique blend of neon paintings and DJ-style music.

Zari Kazandjian

Zari est une artiste, dessinatrice et illustratrice canadienne d’origine arménienne, qui réside et travaille à Montréal. Elle a obtenu un baccalauréat en histoire de l’art à l’Université McGill et a exposé ses œuvres à Miami, à New York et au Canada.

Le travail de Zari va des paysages et des fleurs expressionnistes abstraits aux portraits figuratifs modernes. Ayant été formée aux méthodes artistiques classiques et modernes, Zari applique ses connaissances et ses expériences des deux mondes pour la création de ses œuvres. 

Elle peint en couches épaisses en appliquant de manière complexe des huiles avec des lignes ludiques de fusain qu’elle aime appeler “chaos soigneusement calculé”.

Zari est passionnée par l’art et l’enseignement. La narration est au cœur de sa pratique. Lorsque vous peinturée avec elle, vous apprenez bien plus que la manière d’appliquer la peinture. Zari vous emmène dans une aventure artistique où vous aller apprendre tout ce qui se cache derrière l’œuvre que vous créez, qu’il s’agisse d’un Picasso ou de licornes étincelantes.

Lya Gutierrez

Fille d’une talentueuse première ballerine du Mexique et petite-fille d’une chanteuse d’opéra et première ballerine du prestigieux ballet russe, Lya détient des racines artistiques profondes. Sa passion pour les arts s’exprime dans son amour de la danse flamenco, ainsi que ses compétences en peinture et dessin à l’acrylique.. Ayant enseigné au Mexique, en Corée du Sud et au Canada, elle encourage le multiculturalisme dans tous ses projets et vous souhaite la bienvenue à KANVAZ, où la diversité n’est pas seulement la bienvenue mais avant tout la force motrice.

Angelo David Russo

L’artiste montréalais Angelo David Russo s’efforce de repousser les limites du portrait moderne et de la narration, en proposant une approche novatrice qui va au-delà des conventions traditionnelles. À travers ses peintures, il crée des compositions texturées et sculpturales en utilisant des techniques mixtes, s’inspirant du surréalisme, du cubisme et de l’art de rue. Guidé par Leopold Plotek à l’Université Concordia, Russo a développé son style en 2012, en intégrant des techniques de collage et de résistance à la bande adhésive. Ces méthodes reflètent son processus de découverte de soi et d’exploration identitaire. Pendant la pandémie, il a également acquis une maîtrise du coulage à l’acrylique, qu’il intègre désormais dans la plupart de ses œuvres. Il explore également de nouvelles façons de combiner l’art fluide avec d’autres techniques mixtes.

Russo se penche sur les thèmes de la psyché humaine tout en expérimentant continuellement différentes techniques et matériaux. Son projet actuel, intitulé “The Narrative Series”, est un travail conceptuel composé d’une série d’œuvres d’art inspirées des hauts et des bas de la vie. Il décrit ces créations comme un journal intime crypté visuellement, que le spectateur peut décoder ou lier à ses propres expériences.

Outre son engagement artistique, Russo accorde une grande importance à la collaboration et à l’engagement communautaire. Depuis 2015, il a dirigé six vitrines artistiques multidisciplinaires à Montréal et a animé un atelier pour enfants lors du festival MTL en Arts 2016. Il est également le fondateur d’Art for Jeunesse, J’écoute, une initiative soutenue par BMO Banque de Montréal. Cette initiative permet à des artistes de tout le Canada de faire don de leurs œuvres d’art aux enchères, et tous les profits sont reversés à Jeunesse, J’écoute.

Animé par sa passion pour l’art et sa communauté, Russo poursuit le développement de projets qui favorisent les liens entre les individus, tout en intégrant des composants numériques. Ainsi, il redéfinit la façon dont l’art traditionnel et l’art numérique sont utilisés dans le cadre contemporain d’aujourd’hui.

Azey

Né.e à Montréal, Azey est tombé.e très jeune dans les mangas et a développé une passion qui n’a jamais eu de fin depuis. Non seulement son impressionnante collection de mangas est une source constante d’inspiration mais iel est toujours à la recherche de nouveautés. Iel dévote les Webtoons et les animés. Étudiant.e au profil STEAM du Collègue VIlla-Maria, Azey continue d’approfondir ses connaissances en arts et technologie ainsi que l’utilisation d’autres médias pour exprimer ses envols artistiques!

Gabriela Bolívar

Gabby Bolívar was born in Venezuela. Art has always been in her life since she was a child. He started oil painting classes at the age of 8, which gave her the opportunity to participate in some local painting competitions and hold some exhibitions. Painting has always been her passion. When she moved to Canada, she continued to experiment with different painting techniques and craft projects. She has been teaching and sharing her passion for more than 10 years. She believes that we all have an artistic side, we just have to let it out.

She specializes in landscapes and urban life, especially in the use of acrylic paint.

Aidan Finn Yates

Aidan est un graphiste et un stratège de l’éco-marque qui a perfectionné ses compétences en étudiant la conception de la publicité à l’Université OCAD. Il croit profondément que la nature est l’ultime source d’inspiration. Aidan aborde ses projets créatifs avec la mission de trouver un équilibre harmonieux, créer une esthétique visuellement captivante qui résonne profondément avec le spectateur.

Zari Kazandjian

Zari is a Canadian artist, designer and illustrator of Armenian origin, who lives and works in Montreal. She obtained a B.A. in Art History from McGill University and has exhibited her work in Miami, New York and Canada.

Zari’s work ranges from abstract expressionist landscapes and florals to modern figurative portraits. Having been trained in both classical and modern artistic methods, Zari applies her knowledge and experience of both worlds to the creation of her works.

She paints in thick layers, intricately applying oils with playful charcoal lines that she likes to call “carefully calculated chaos”.

Zari is passionate about art and teaching. Narrative is at the heart of his practice. When you paint with her, you learn much more than just how to apply the paint. Zari takes you on an artistic adventure where you’ll learn everything that lies behind the work you create, whether it’s a Picasso or sparkling unicorns.

Lya Gutierrez

Daughter of a talented Mexican prima ballerina and granddaughter of an opera singer and prima ballerina with the prestigious Russian ballet, Lya has deep artistic roots. Her passion for the arts is expressed in her love of flamenco dance, as well as her skills in acrylic painting and drawing. Having taught in Mexico, South Korea and Canada, she encourages multiculturalism in all her projects and welcomes you to KANVAZ, where diversity is not only welcome but above all the driving force.

Angelo David Russo

Montreal artist Angelo David Russo strives to push the boundaries of modern portraiture and narrative, offering an innovative approach that goes beyond traditional conventions. In his paintings, he creates textured, sculptural compositions using mixed media, inspired by surrealism, cubism and street art. Guided by Leopold Plotek at Concordia University, Russo developed his style in 2012, incorporating gluing and tape-resistance techniques. These methods reflect her process of self-discovery and identity exploration. During the pandemic, he also mastered acrylic casting, which he now incorporates into most of his works. He also explores new ways of combining fluid art with other mixed media.

Russo explores themes of the human psyche while continually experimenting with different techniques and materials. His current project, entitled “The Narrative Series”, is a conceptual work consisting of a series of artworks inspired by the ups and downs of life. He describes these creations as visually encrypted diaries that viewers can decode or link to their own experiences.

In addition to his artistic commitment, Russo places great importance on collaboration and community involvement. Since 2015, he has directed six multidisciplinary art showcases in Montreal and led a children’s workshop at the 2016 MTL en Arts festival. He is also the founder of Art for Kids Help Phone, an initiative supported by BMO Bank of Montreal. This initiative allows artists from across Canada to donate their artwork for auction, with all proceeds going to Kids Help Phone.

Driven by his passion for art and his community, Russo continues to develop projects that foster connections between people, while integrating digital components. In doing so, he redefines the way traditional and digital art are used in today’s contemporary setting.

Azey

Born in Montreal, Azey fell into manga at a very early age and developed a passion that has never ended. Not only is his impressive manga collection a constant source of inspiration, but he’s always on the lookout for something new. He’s a devotee of Webtoons and anime. A STEAM student at Collègue VIlla-Maria, Azey continues to deepen his knowledge of art and technology, as well as the use of other media to express his artistic flights of fancy!

Aidan is a graphic designer and eco-branding strategist who honed his skills studying advertising design at OCAD University. He deeply believes that nature is the ultimate source of inspiration. Aidan approaches his creative projects with the mission of finding a harmonious balance, creating a visually captivating aesthetic that resonates deeply with the viewer.
